Andy Ward is best known as one of the guys responsible for the worldwide anthem – Strings of Life, the remake he made as Soul Central, alongside Timmy Vegas.
His story starts way before this….
Andy Ward first gained success as a DJ in his home town of Birmingham, UK in the early 90’s. It was his legendary Sunday morning parties at The Marco Polo Bar that gained the support and following of his many friends in the second city, a following which allowed him to take an unprecedented 200+ people on a UK wide tour, playing at the then super clubs such as Cream and Love to Be.
In 1995 he was hailed by Mixmag as one of ten new talents to watch out for , alongside the likes of Tony de Vit, Elliot Eastwick & Gayle San.
His musical style started out as an even blend of early rave anthems, which could have been anything from a Chicago house track to an exctasy-driven hands in the air number. It was this variety in his playing that led Andy to be able to adapt his set at any given time to the crowd in front of him, and this style slowly started to gain him notoriety around the UK.
The next chapter in his career was when he was invited to join Choice FM in Birmingham, and what was fortunate timing in his appointment led him to be given three shows across the weekend on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Once again Andy used his musical knowledge and tastes to present a diverse spectrum of music to the people of Birmingham and continued to gain more and more listeners. As Choice FM became Galaxy 102.2, Andy was given the prime time slot of a Friday evening and competed with Pete Tong for the lion’s share of the audience in the Midlands.
Various residencies in Birmingham and The Mud Club in London were accompanied by guest appearances at more and more high profile venues, and slowly but surely Andy became a regular headliner around the country at clubs like Back to Basics, Miss Moneypenny’s and his favourite venue outside of Birmingham, Garage City. It was this connection with Garage City and his faultless performances there that led Andy to become resident DJ for what he now describes as one of the best parties in the world. Since its conception Andy has played and continues to play alongside the world’s most respected DJs for Soul Heaven, which is into it’s 10th year, starting at The Ministry of Sound. He has also played the legendary Southport Weekender twice, warming up for the Masters at Work & Joe Clausell respectively. When Soul Heaven launched their Sunday night party in Ibiza in 08, Louie Vega specifically requested Andy to open up for him, another indication of the respect and commitment to quality he possesses.
Whilst maintaining the credibility of the deep house fraternity, Andy also has a strong following in many countries around the world, thanks to his dedication to observing a crowd and giving them exactly what they want. As times and music tastes change, Andy has adapted his sets to incorporate the latest sounds whilst maintaining his trademark “groove”. Never afraid to play an anthem when needed, always willing to break the latest deep house track on an unsuspecting crowd, Andy continues to win new territories over with his faultless sets – put him in front of a big room and he will rock it.
Not only has he conquered the DJ booth, he also enjoys phenomenal success as one half of chart topping duo Soul Central, alongside his long time studio partner Timmy Vegas. In 2005 Soul Central stormed the UK charts at an impressive debut number 6, with their worldwide smash “Strings of Life”. Once again, Andy found himself step up a notch in his career, becoming a world class producer has enabled him to cover all continents, with several worldwide tours under his belt. Continuing to release both club anthems and underground classics, Andy enjoys a healthy remix and release schedule, not only as Soul Central but with his own productions and collaborations with other artists on his Sounds of the Booth imprint.
Andy presents the Vocal Booth on various stations worldwide, The Vocal Booth Club Sessions on SSradiouk.com, as well as the Soul Heaven Radio show (syndicated stations worldwide) with thousands subscribing to his weekly podcasts. His world famous Vocal Booth parties are now into their tenth year and continue to bring the best music week in, week out to the masses. The Vocal Booth Weekender in Spain is the latest venture to attract enormous support from Andy’s loyal “Family” and is creating quite a stir around the world.
Andy says “I consider myself to be a party DJ. I’ve been back to back with the best in the business, warmed up at the biggest events in the world and can go as deep as anyone. Saying that, I’m at my happiest playing tunes that make people go crazy. Whether that’s playing something from the heart at Soul Heaven or banging it out in front of 2000 people as Soul Central. I’m in the fortunate position to be able to play music i want to dance to all night, and there’s nothing better than doing it week in week out with like minded folk. Sounds corny, but it’s the truth !”
